I’m Sammy Morgan, and I run M1 Studio from 69 Adelaide Road, Chichester, PO19 7NQ. I design and build websites, set up Google Business Profiles and local search, and add the systems that turn visits into enquiries: missed-call text back, follow-up, reviews and booking.

The Office for National Statistics counts 6,870 businesses registered for VAT or PAYE in Chichester district in its 2026 figures. Of those, 6,185 employ fewer than 10 people. Businesses registered for neither, such as some small sole traders, aren’t included, so the real number is higher.

The biggest groups in the ONS count are:

• Professional, scientific and technical services: 1,235
• Construction: 925
• Business administration and support: 590
• Arts, entertainment, recreation and other services: 525
• Agriculture, forestry and fishing: 470
• Retail: 455
• Accommodation and food: 410

The district had about 124,100 residents at the 2021 Census, up from about 113,800 in 2011.

What that means for a website: most local businesses are small, and many are trades, professional firms and hospitality. A small team can’t answer every call or chase every quote, so the site has to do more of that work. That’s why I build for enquiries first. The industry pages go deeper: builders, plumbers, accountants, hospitality and holiday lets.

When someone in Chichester searches for a plumber, a salon or a web designer, the map pack of three businesses usually comes first. Google says three things decide local results:

• Relevance: “how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for”. Your categories, services and description matter here.
• Distance: “how far each business is from the customer who’s searching”. You can’t change where you are, which is why a business in Chichester tends to show more often to people searching nearby.
• Prominence: how well known a business is, “based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have”.

Google also says “there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking”. Nobody can promise you the top spot, me included.

A few Google rules catch local businesses out:

• If you visit customers rather than having them come to you, you’re a service-area business, and Google says you should hide your address and set a service area.
• Your service area “shouldn’t extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time” from your base.
• Your business name on Google must be your real name. Adding “Chichester” or a keyword to it breaks the guidelines.

There are good web designers in and around Chichester, and good ones who work remotely. Whoever you talk to, these questions sort them out quickly:

1. Can I see the price before I commit? A published price or a fixed written quote beats an hourly estimate.
2. Will the domain and the site be in my name? You should own both, and be able to move them.
3. Who writes the words? Many projects stall waiting for the owner to write copy. Ask whether it’s included.
4. Can I see live sites you’ve built? Try them on your phone and send a test enquiry.
5. What happens after launch, and what does it cost each month? Hosting and maintenance should be listed before you agree. The website maintenance cost guide has typical UK ranges.
6. How will enquiries reach me? A site that looks good but sends forms to an inbox nobody checks doesn’t help.
7. What do other customers say? Check reviews on Google and other sites, not only the testimonials on the designer’s own site.
