What gets in the way for tutors.
- Parents compare before they contact you
- A parent looking at three tutors picks the one whose page answers their questions. If your prices, subjects or availability aren’t clear, they message someone whose are.
- Busy seasons, then quiet ones
- Enquiries often rush in before mocks and the 11+, then fall away after the summer exams. Without a way to capture interest early, you can be full in spring and quiet in July.
- Cancelled lessons
- Pupils get ill, have clubs or forget to log on. Without a notice period and payment up front, a cancelled evening slot is income you don’t get back.
- The DBS question
- Parents often ask whether you’re DBS checked. Since 21 January 2026, self-employed people in eligible roles can apply for their own enhanced DBS check through a DBS umbrella body, which wasn’t possible before. If you hold a certificate, say so plainly.

Parents usually choose, even when the pupil is a teenager. They ask other parents at the school gate or in a class WhatsApp group, search for something like “maths tutor near me” or “11+ tutor” plus the town, and look at tutoring directories. Demand bunches around the exam calendar: 11+ preparation in the months before the tests, mock exams in the winter, and GCSE and A level revision in the spring before summer exams. Before they commit, parents want to know which subjects and exam boards you teach, your experience, your hourly price or termly package, whether lessons are online or at home, and whether you hold a current DBS certificate. Many ask for a trial lesson first.

Can a self-employed tutor get an enhanced DBS check?
Since 21 January 2026, yes, if the role is eligible. Self-employed people apply for their own enhanced check through a DBS umbrella body rather than directly to DBS, and it’s down to the tutor to apply. DBS explains eligibility in its guidance for self-employed people. M1 doesn’t give legal advice on this.
Once you have a certificate, put it where parents look, next to your subjects and prices. An Enquiry Page is a good place to start.
Should I put my prices on my website?
Usually, yes. Parents compare tutors, and a clear hourly price or termly package saves messages back and forth. If price depends on the level, show a starting price for each. The page on tutoring websites that don’t get enquiries covers what else parents look for.
Online or in person: how should my website handle both?
Say plainly which you offer, where you travel to for home lessons and which platform you use online. Parents often search with a town name, so a Google profile naming the areas you cover helps if you teach in person. If you only teach online, Google may not allow a Business Profile, because its rules require in-person contact with customers. See the Local Search Fix.
