How can a plumber get more Google reviews?

Text every customer your Google review link before you drive away, while the leak is fixed or the heating is back on, and use each annual boiler service as another chance to ask. Someone searching in an emergency picks from the map results on star rating and how recent the reviews look, so a steady flow of new reviews matters.

Why it happens to plumbers.

Emergency customers decide in seconds
With water coming through the ceiling, people scan the map results and ring a plumber who looks busy and trusted. They look at the rating and the dates, not much else.
Gratitude fades fast
A customer is most grateful the moment the water stops or the boiler fires up. By the evening they’ve moved on, and a request a week later is easy to ignore.
Lots of small jobs, few asks
Tap washers, radiator valves, a blocked waste. You might finish several small jobs a day, and each one is a review you didn’t ask for.
Reviews stuck on directories
Checkatrade and MyBuilder reviews help on those sites, but Google Maps puts your Google reviews first, and that’s where the “plumber near me” search lands.

What to do, in order.

  1. Save your review link on your phone

Copy the “ask for reviews” link from your Google Business Profile and keep it as a text shortcut, so sending it takes seconds.

  2. Ask before you leave the house

Tell the customer you’ll send a link, then send it from the van. Suggest they say what the job was, like “boiler service” or “leak under the sink”, which helps the next person searching for that job.

  3. Use the annual service

Boiler service customers come back every year. Ask the ones who haven’t reviewed you yet when you book or finish the service.

  4. Ask everyone, and never pay for it

Google bans incentives and asking only the customers you expect to be happy (known as review gating). UK consumer law also bans fake reviews and hidden incentivised ones, and the Competition and Markets Authority has published guidance on it.

  5. Make the asking automatic

The Local Search Fix and Missed-Call Rescue both set up review requests that go to every customer after the job.

Do more reviews help me show up on Google Maps?

Google says the number of reviews and your rating are part of how it judges how well known a business is, alongside how relevant you are and how far you are from the searcher. Nobody can promise a position in the map pack, but a steady run of real reviews helps people choose you when you do appear.

Can I knock something off the bill for a review?

No. Google’s rules ban any reward for a review, and UK law bans hiding incentivised reviews. The CMA’s fake reviews guidance explains the rules. Ask plainly and make it easy with a direct link. The reviews guide has wording you can use.

Should I reply to every review?

Yes, briefly. Thank people and mention the job. If someone complains, reply once, calmly, with what you did to put it right. People reading your reviews before they ring you read the replies too.
