Why is my restaurant or pub not showing on Google Maps?

Often it’s a duplicate or old listing from a previous owner, a profile wrongly marked as closed, or the wrong main category, so Google shows something else or nothing. Claim the right profile, remove or merge duplicates, fix your hours and category, and add your menu as text rather than only a PDF.

Do it yourself?
Yes, the first steps below

Why it happens to restaurants, cafes and pubs.

Old owners and duplicates
Venues change hands. The old business’s profile can stay live, or a new one gets made beside it, and Google splits the signals between them.
Wrong hours or “closed”
After a refit or a change of owner, a profile can be marked temporarily or permanently closed. Wrong hours also send people elsewhere.
Category doesn’t match searches
A gastropub listed only as “Bar” may not show for “Sunday roast near me”. The main category and extra categories decide which searches you match.
Menus as PDFs
A PDF menu is hard to read on a phone. Menu items and dishes written on your profile and website give Google and customers more to go on.

What to do, in order.

  1. Search your venue name

Look for duplicates, old names and wrong pins on Google Maps, and note each one.

  2. Claim and clean up

Claim the right profile, then report duplicates and closed listings through Google so they can be merged or removed.

  3. Fix hours and special hours

Set your normal hours, kitchen hours if they differ, and bank holiday and Christmas hours ahead of time.

  4. Add menu, bookings and allergens

Put your menu in as text, link your booking system, and explain how guests can ask about allergens.

  5. Have it done properly

The Local Search Fix fills in the profile, fixes key website pages, adds schema markup and sets up review requests.

How do I remove the previous owner’s listing?

Report it through Google Maps as closed or a duplicate, and request ownership if you have taken over the same business. It can take a while and sometimes needs more than one request.

Should my menu be a PDF?

Keep a PDF if you like, but put the menu on your website as text too. It reads better on a phone, and it’s easier to update. You must also be able to give guests allergen information for the 14 major allergens, so make it clear how to ask.
