How do driving instructors cut late cancellations and no-shows?
Set a clear cancellation notice period, take payment or a deposit when lessons are booked, and send a reminder before each lesson. Write the policy down and show it when pupils book, so nobody is surprised when a late cancellation is charged.

- Yes, the first steps below
Why it happens to driving schools.
- A lost hour can’t be resold
- A lesson cancelled the evening before is very hard to fill, because few pupils can take a lesson at a few hours’ notice.
- Pay on the day makes skipping easy
- When a pupil pays at the lesson, there’s nothing to lose by not turning up. Block bookings paid up front change that.
- Exams, shifts and college
- Many learners are students or work shifts. Mock exams, timetables and rota changes cause late cancellations, especially in exam season.
- Test dates change the plan
- Since 12 May 2026 only the learner can book or move their own test. If a pupil moves their test without telling you, the lessons you planned around it change too.
What to do, in order.
Write your cancellation policy
Pick a notice period you can live with, such as 24 or 48 hours, and say what happens if a pupil cancels late or doesn’t turn up.
Take payment before the lesson
Ask for payment up front for block bookings, or a deposit for single lessons, so a late cancellation isn’t all your loss.
Remind pupils the day before
A text with the time and pick-up point catches the ones who forgot.
Ask pupils to share test dates
Agree that pupils tell you when they book or change a test, so lessons can be planned around it.
Take bookings and deposits online

Can I charge for a lesson cancelled late?
Many instructors do, as long as the policy was agreed before the booking. Put it in writing and show it when pupils book. M1 doesn’t give legal advice, so if you’re unsure about your terms, check with an adviser. The guide to reducing no-shows with deposits covers how to present it.
What does online booking cost to run?
Online Booking & Deposits is a fixed £1,800 to set up, paid half to start and half at launch. The booking tool’s monthly fee and the card fees on deposits are paid directly by you, and listed before you agree. See what’s included.
How much are cancellations costing me?
Multiply your hourly price by the lessons lost each month, then by twelve. The no-show cost calculator does the sum for you.
